Christmas Adverts

Marks & Spencers (tissues out!)

1) Which do you think is the most appealing and why? Try to use some of our audience theory in your answer.
The one I thought was most appealing is the Sainsbury's official advert. I chose this one to be the most appealing to me as it gave an idea of how Christmas brings everyone together; almost like a reunion. After working at their workplaces, the advert shows how Christmas is a time for the whole family to reunite and spend time with each other. Also, the song says "the best gift I can give is me" suggests how you being there for your family in Christmas is the best gift your family could get.

2) Are there any audience pleasures that two or more of the adverts have in common? Choose two examples to illustrate your point.
With the audience pleasures, the Very.co.uk Christmas advert and the M&S Christmas advert are both quite similar. The audience both consume a media which shows an individual going around satisfying people. In very.co.uk advert, we have a woman who goes around fixing people's issues and then they immediately become happy. Moreover, with the M&S advert, we have a Mrs Santa Claus that also goes to a boy's house to meet the needs of the boy as the boy asked for something to the Mrs Claus and she did it. These two adverts are both similar as the audience then realise how in Christmas, you get what you want. Also, in Christmas, you always become happy eventually and this is what the two adverts are trying to suggest.

3) Choose a different advert and identify the target audience for the advert. Answer in terms of demography and psychography. What tells you this?

In this Nike advert, we see a boy almost being forced to play every sport at different locations. With the Slogan "Just do it", it makes sense as in the advert, the boy was asked to play every sports which he did straight away without even knowing what to do. With the demographic, I can state that the people that the boy in the advert would relate to is the E social class as we are shown a boy that plays sport in a court and it seems to be in a typical working class location. Moreover, with the psychographic, I can state that this would fit into Explorers.

4) Why do you think Christmas adverts, in particular, often use emotive language and narratives to appeal to a wide audience?
They use emotive language and narratives in Christmas adverts to appeal to a wide audience. This is because they want Christmas to be celebrated by many people and for that reason, they are trying to relate real issues that get resolved within the Christmas adverts to appeal to a wider audience.
