Audience Theory - Hypodermic needle

Audience theory: blog tasks

Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?
The hypodermic needle model definitely links with the article as the article shows that if the audience of violent video games play a brutal and a violent game for 20minutes for over 3 days, it can influence the audience negatively and will change their behaviour. Moreover, it shows that the whole audience can be impacted pessimistically if they keep on playing violent games and it just shows how these violent games have such as dangerous effect on people. The behaviour of the audience eventually change without them knowing; they will start to behave more violently.
2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?
The hypodermic also links with the Talk Talk hacking case as the information that was broadcasted was negative and this just shows how a violent video game can influence the audience into doing bad things. Moreover, the information was received by the audience which forces them to realize how bad the son is. This just shows how dangerous violent games are. Lastly, the front cover could have many critiques as the information about the boy is not covered and his whole identity is being shown. And the title is "Son of a single mother"; the fact that this quote is added suggests how the media is trying lower down single mothers into not being responsible for their child and letting them play violent games.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?
The two-step flow theory involves a high person in the media to share his views and opinions to influence other people through the use of media.

2) How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two-step flow model?
The YouTube blogger certainly fits into the two-step flow model as he encourages people into playing the game as he gives his thoughts on the game which people would most likely be convinced by. This will convince them to buy the game as they see a person that is high media give good feedback on the game.

3) How this this Telegraph article on influential tweeters fit the two-step flow model?
This telegraph article about influentual tweeters fit into the two-step flow model as anyone can go on twitter and give their opinions and perspectives on certain things. People like PewdiePie has a wide fanbase and there are many people that follow him on Twitter and they always give opinions on certain things he does.

4) Read this BBC profile of Jamal Edwards. How does Jamal Edwards link to the two-step flow model?
Jamal Edwards has a huge YouTube channel and links to the two-step flow model as he could influence some of the audience into watching certain things or listening to certain music.

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points.

1) Diversion = escape from reality

For Diversion, I have chosen The Avengers movie and I think in my perspective that this is a good example of diversion because it allows you to see different things from reality, For example, in this movie, you see destruction, Superheroes with super powers and mythical creatures. And people watch these kind of movies to escape from reality and feel different by watching movies that have elements of futuristic world or just mythical elements. They help us as an audience to feel entertained and stress-free as we consume something that does not real and does not exist. Moreover, with the narrative mainly always being good vs bad in these type of Superhero movies, it forces the audience to forget about the outside world and to tune in on with the movie to see what is going to happen within the movie.

2) Personal Relationships= using media for emotional and other interaction

For personal relationships, I have chosen Narnia and I think the franchise of Narnia is a great example of the audience getting interactive with the characters. With the franchise of Narnia, the audiences will definitely have developed their feelings towards some of the characters with the 4 movies of Narnia. Moreover, with the franchise, the audiences will definitely have picked their favourite character and the firm bond between the audience. With their favourite characters, some of them have deaths awaiting in the upcoming movie or the present movie. Mainly the deaths of those characters are left behind till the nearing end of the movie which forces to have a bigger impact on the audience as it makes it more emotional for the audience as they have had a bond through all the franchise of Narnia.

3) Personal Identity= finding ourselves reflected in texts or learning behaviour and values from the media

For Personal identity, I have chosen the movie 22 Jumpstreet as I think many teenagers or young adults can relate to the two characters with their problems and their behaviour and what they are into. Moreover, with Jonah Hill, he is presented to be the funnier character than Channing Tatum and that is a little like me as I tend to be making jokes and being funny most of the time. Furthermore, Jonah Hill always tries to get passed the negative issues that him and his friend face. And I can personally say that I am a person that doesn;t like to see negative things happening around me so I tend to act like nothing has happened so I make jokes or I just laugh about it. Lastly, Jonah Hill tends to not care about what people care about him within the two Jumpstreet movies and I quite relate to that because I certainly do not care about what people think of me. As long as I feel happy about myself, I am satisfied.

4) Surveillance

For this one, I have chosen BBC sport. BBC sport is created to show the information about certain sports and to show the live scores or what has been happening around sports. For example, Arsenal are trying to buy a new player, the BBC sport will certainly cover that on their website to let the consumers know about the incident. It gives useful information to the sport fans as it satisfies them.
