Ill Manors: Print Platform

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
I will be identifying the target audience for the 4 following magazines which are:
Men's Health, NME Magazine, Guardian and Daily Mail.

Firstly, the target audience for Men's Health is I believe it would be 85% male and 15% female due to the title of the magazine and the other aspects of the magazine in particular.  This magazine talks more about the health of male and the things they can do to maintain their fitness and health which is the reason why this magazine is targeted more towards male than females. Moreover, the target audience of this magazine would also be the men that care about their appearance and how they look because this magazine offers tips and what to do. Additionally, looking at age wise, I think men that are in their early 20s to 35 would be the target audience for this magazine because at that age, you tend to care more about your appearance and care about the way you look. In addition, with social status wise, I think the target audience for this magazine would mainly be middle class and upper class people who have a really healthy and active life that want to achieve more in fitness and health.

Secondly, the target audience for the NME magazine is I believe it would be 70% male and 30% female because male tend to be more enthusiastic about music and would buy the music magazines. Moreover, the age variation would be from 17 to 30 because at those ages, more people tend to listen to music that might be hip-hop or any other genre. Also, the social class would mainly be middle class and upper who are well educated about music and bands. Its targeted towards younger people that are into trendy and popular things and like to consume a lot of media such as movies.

Thirdly, the target audience for the Guardian magazine is I believe it would be 55% male and 45% female because male tend to be interested in recent news. Moreover, they target a more well educated audience that are relatively young from the age of 20 to 35 perhaps. The audience tend to be interested in politics, exhibitions and international news.

Lastly, the target audience for the Daily Mail magazine is I believe it would be more women than men with percentage of 60% of female and 40% male. Furthermore, the social class wise I believe would be more lower middle class and below women and less men. Also, the consumers of this magazine tend to look at famous celebrities or mainstream news that are happening mainly within big countries such as America which have many famous celebrities.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?

In this article, Plan B is represented as more of a serious business looking man that is wearing a suit in both of the photos which is different to what he wore in the other articles. Also, underneath both of the pictures of Plan B in a suit, the pricing of the products that Plan B is wearing is stated under the pictures which is more than just entertainment because it allows the audience to know what the product is which they can look at themselves later on. The audience pleasures that this article offers is that the higher class and high middle class people will take interest in this article because they'll be interested in the professional and smart clothing of Plan B.

In this NME article, it does do more than entertain as it creates a bond or a relationship with the consumers. This is something that the audience feel more satisfied about as they understand him better. Also, Plan B talks about his past, living in the poor environment in britain and how he suffered the same way the youth are suffering today. Lastly, the youth are the target audience for this article because they can relate and the audience pleasure would be that it would convince them to watch the movie to see the problems being portrayed in a  movie.

In this article, the uses of images and texts combination have an interesting effect on the consumers where the consumers feel more active to read the article as well as looking at the images of the director of Ill Manors.

For the last article which is daily mail, this article does do more than just entertain as it involves personal identification. This means that the consumers can relate with some of the things that Plan B is stating on the Daily Mail article. They might feel the same way as he has quoted or they have experienced horrible things just like he has.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
The codes and conventions of print interviews in this article is firstly, the title at the top of the article which reached out to the consumers on what the article is going to include and what it is going to be about. The title of this article is "MH interview: Plan B" which the consumers would know which celebrity is involved in the article. Also, the short heading is "Mr Ben Drew reveals how he shed over2st in a year and reinvented himself as a film maker. Also the design is very simple and professional to suit the pictures and also, the colour scheme is very dull which in case makes the article look better and more professional.

With the NME article, it is seen that the article contains both negative and positive vibe with Ben Drew. This is because Ben Drew is pictured as a "chav" wearing a hoodie and smoking a cigarette; this is a negative image of the youths. However, there is another picture of him dressed in a suit which is more of a positive vibe as Ben Drew looks more serious. This is a transformation of Ben Drew to influence the younger people in this society that they can change their lifestyle.

Thirdly, with the third article which is the Guardian interview, the codes and conventions used here are that there are images of Plan B and quotes used to better the understanding of the consumers. The consumers will find it more interesting and easier to understand through the use of images combined with texts.

Lastly, the uses of images and texts are very important here. The texts act as the subheadings for each image as they are written in bold writing in top of the images. This allows the consumers to be caught by the texts as it is bold so they can understand what the picture might be telling. Or who the picture might involve.

4) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article to the very end?

The way the narrative is used to tell a story in this interview is that everything that was said was very clear, understandable and not repeated which keeps the consumers intrigued and interested on what is being said by Ben Drew. Also, the questions asked were very straightfoward and Ben Drew answered the questions swiftly with short sentences to make it more clear and understandable for the consumers.

Within this article, Plan B talks about his past and how he grew up. He went in depth with what he experienced during his childhood time. With these past stories that Plan B told, it makes the consumers intrigued and interested which convinces them to focus on longer. Lastly, he talks about the political views on how it has affected the council estate areas and the people that live there such as the youths that are becoming corrupted.

In this article, Plan B is represented as a low class person that hasn't got much hope at the beginning when relieving his background issues and childhood problems and where he came from. This can used for Todorov's equilibrium and disequilibrium theory where this article starts off with a disequilibrium for Plan B when revealing his background. Later on, equilibrium occurs when he reveals his future plans on becoming more successful.

In the Daily Mail article, Plan B exploits the errors in producing the Ill Manors movie and how it makes the movie "bad" to many consumers. This is because some consumers are not familiar with what is happening and the purpose of the movie's narrative.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far?

There is a synergy between the text and the other broadcast examples because in both of them, Plan B or Ben Drew which is the same person don't talk about the creation of Ill Manors and what inspired him to produce this debut amazing movie that reflects the atmosphere and events of council estate areas and the youths in London

In the NME magazine which is more linked to music, there is a synergy of when Plan B talks his music as well as his movie and talks about the production process of the both. Also, there is a synergy when he wears urban clothes and poses negatively which has a negative influence on the media and the consumers. Lastly, the messages that he has stated in all the other interviews are very similar and consistant.

In the Guardian article, there is a synergy with another broadcast as in this article, Plan B talks about the production process and what the intentions were with this movie. Similarly in the DVD extras, this is talked about where Plan B is questioned about these and he answers them,

Lastly, the main character which is Riz Ahmed, we see him holding a gun in the front cover which has a synergy with the movie itself as we see him there holding a gun too.
