MEST 1 PPE/; Learner Response

1) Type up any feedback or comments from your paper in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

  • "You have written a whole page without answering the question at all"
  • "Your expression is all over the place"
  • "This is institution and you haven't said anything about values of BBC as a channel"
  • "Make points that are clear"
  • "You have not said what prime-time means"
  • "Organise your ideas"
  • "Practise structuring your answer"

2) Did you succeed in meeting or exceeding your target grade in AS Media? If not, how many additional marks do you need across Section A and Section B to achieve your target grade?

I didn't meet or exceed my target grade in AS Media for the MEST 1 PPE as I got a U grade which is far off from a C grade. I didn't achieve many satisfying marks in Section A and Section B. With Section A, I was only achievning 3-5 marks which is very unacceptable considering my target grade is a C.

3) Read through the mark scheme. Pay particular attention to pages 6-9 that have anticipated content for each of the questions in Section A. How many of these potential points did you make? Did you successfully answer the questions? The original question paper is here if that is useful.

4) Which was your strongest question in Section A? Why did you do better in that particular question?
The strongest question in Section A for me was the "Audiences" question which I scored 5 on. I did better on this question rather than the other 3 other questions as in this question, I focused more on the question where for the other questions, I didn't focus on the question at all or just focused on it later on. Also, I spoke about the demographics such as the mixture of gender in the extract which we was shown. I built up on that too. Moreover, I also added an audience theory which was Blumler and Katz.

5) Which was your weakest question in Section A? Again, try and identify why this happened. Did you misinterpret the question? Did you run out of time?
The weakest question in Section B for me was the first question which was about "representation". It was my weakest question due to variety of reasons. Firstly, I put it into a whole 1 paragraph instead of each which made it very unclear. Also, I never added the topic sentence which is to introduce the topic by answering the question. Moreover, I never focused on the question at all within the whole 1 paragraph that I wrote. I misinterpreted the question by adding in points that weren't relevant to the question.

6) Rewrite your answer for your weakest question in Section A. This should now be a detailed, three-paragraph, level-4 response.

How is the representation of the "Metro Salvage" workers as a family unit constructed?

The "Metro Salvage" workers are represented as a family unit through the non-diegetic sound used within the short extract. The non-diegetic opra-like sound is quite parallel to what was happening within the sequence as we see the workers of "Metro Salvage" having a laughter and an enjoyable time while working. Also, with the fun and enjoyable time, there is a mixture of serious times too where the workers work together seriously as seen during the video, the "hero" which is from Propp's character theory, was commanding to one of the worker's seriously which shows how the family is like any other typical family. We see the "hero" or the boss as the "father-like" figure to his workers. Also, within the sequence, we hear a dialogue from the "boss" saying "Metro Family made from scratch" which suggests how the workers within that workplace are very close just like a family. Essentially, the "Metro Salvage" workers are represented as a family unit as non-diegetic sounds, actions and dialogues help convey that idea of how the workers are like a family.

Moreover, the workers are also represented as a family unit through the characters roles that helps to convey the idea of "family unit" being constructed within the sequence. An evidence would be that within the sequence, the roles of the wife and the husband plays well to create the family unit. With Propp's character theory, it could be said that the husband is the "hero" and the wife is the "princess" through the dialogue within the sequence which the wife says "Don't go out spending money" which then the husband replies "Can I spend it on you then?" which is a representation of a typical married couple. Moreover, the typical role of the females within a family unit is shown within video when the husband tells one of the females for a "cup of tea" which suggests how the males are the workers and the females are the ones that prepare meals and drinks for the males which is also a typical family representation. Also, the other workers are represented as quite immature and funny workers as well as serious that tend to look up to the boss and obey the boss through the evidence within the sequence as one of the workers say "Good morning Boss" which shows the respect they have for him. This could convey the idea of how these workers are like his little children that obey him and listen to him. Essentially, these roles help to construct a family unit within the Metro Salvage workers.

7) Now look at the mark scheme for Section B. Did you cover all three media platforms? Did you write about three different films in your essay? (If you missed out your independent case study this is clearly an area to revise for the real thing).
For Section B, I didn't covered all three media platforms for only 2 films leaving out my own independant case study which I didn't have much time for.

8) Question focus in the most important factor for a top-level response. Did you use the key words in the question in every paragraph? Did each paragraph contain a topic sentence that used the key words from the question?
With my introduction, I repeated the question instead of answering it which was a irrelevant and unacceptable. Also, I didn't quite focus on the question well enough which led me to write about a complete irrelevant topic. And I didn't use topic sentence that answered the question nor did I use paragraphs.

9) Choose one paragraph from your Section B essay and re-write it to improve question focus, examples and written English if applicable. Make sure it is answering the question!

10) Read the Examiner's Report in full. For each question in Section A, look at whether you included the things the Chief Examiner refers to in the stronger responses. Did any of the problems identified with some answers apply to you? Be specific.

11) Now look at the Examiner's Report for your chosen question in Section B. Did your response fit the stronger or weaker examples highlighted by the Chief Examiner? What could you have done differently to improve your mark for Section B?

12) Finally, identify three things you will do differently in the real exam in two weeks. These can refer to preparation, notetaking, Section A or Section B - it is up to you.
The three things that I will do differently in the real exam which is in two weeks is that I would:
  • most certainly focus on the question and try to understand what it is actually trying to ask instead of assuming what it is trying to ask
  • also, use many key media terminologies and theories in the right moment
  • always use paragraphs and follow the PEE guide to be clearer
